“Some of Our Own”

Exhibit

In December 1945, it was announced that there would be an election to a National Convention. The purpose of the National Convention would be to debate and consider the best future for Newfoundland.  Two of delegates elected were born and grew up in Cupids: Joseph Fowler (Port de Grave district) and Isaac Newell (White Bay district).

Cupids Legacy Centre has created an audio and visual exhibit on the National Convention that focuses on Fowler and Newell.  It tells their positions on Confederation – in their own words, with materials from their private collections.  And while the focus of the exhibit is on two Cupids former residents, it also tells the story of the National Convention and will give visitors an understanding of what led Newfoundland to the Canadian Confederation and the role of two delegates from one community.
