Chief Interpreter  

May 29th - September 2nd

Salary: $16.00 per hour; 37.5 hours per week; 14 weeks (TBC)

Cupids Legacy Centre’s Chief Interpreter will lead a team of on‑site interpreters that will greet visitors, provide guided tours, assist with family history research and other related duties.

Education: 

Candidates should be senior undergraduate or graduate students at a recognized university with academic background in any of the following: Museum Studies, History, Applied Arts, Education, Folklore; archival studies or other relevant discipline and a demonstrated interest in History.

Description of Tasks:

1. Participate in intensive training in museum operating systems and controls. The museum exhibits will include a number of state of the art multimedia displays. The Lead Interpreter will be expected to gain a working knowledge of these systems in order to perform start up and shut down procedures and make observations of any systems that are not performing as specified and inform the General Manager.

2. Become very familiar with resources (hard copy family histories, digitized family histories and other on line resources) available at the Family History Resource Centre.  Review what family histories have been uploaded to PastPerfect and update as time allows.

3.  Identify gaps in the project related history resource material available and identify ways and means of accessing material to address those needs

4.  Assist visitors in research at the centre.

5. Work closely with General Manager in developing employee work schedules for the season and ensuring that a full complement of interpretation staff is available for museum operations.

6. Plan, manage and execute tour groups.

7. Coordinate visitor information reception at the entrance to Museum.

8. Generate a report summarizing the research conducted and recommendations for further research in this area. This report will be held in the archival collection at our Family History Resource Centre at Cupids Legacy Centre and would be available to the public for research purposes.

9. Other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, Experience:

  • Proven Supervisory skills

  •  Working knowledge of computers

  • Good interpersonal skills in meeting the public and working with colleagues.

  • The ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision will be considered an asset.  

  • Knowledge or experience in museum operations would be an asset.

  • Other desirable attributes would be skills in research with emphasis on accuracy of details and enthusiasm for the past. Organizational ability is required to perform several different tasks at various locations each day.

Traditional Gamer and Musician - 1 position

 May 29th  – September 2nd , 2023 (14 Weeks - TBC)

Salary: $16.00 per hour; 37.5 hours per week

This Cupids Legacy Centre Traditional Gamer / Musician position will result in the creation of a fun and engaging gaming, recreation, and outdoor activity interpretative program that will demonstrate the cultural fabric of youth growing up in outport Newfoundland over the past three generations. Successful candidate will also assist with research using the resources of the Family History Resource Centre, work as a team member of onsite interpreters that will greet visitors, provide guided tours, and other related duties as assigned. This position will require the successful candidate to play traditional music at various times throughout the day - particularily when bus tours / large groups are entering and milling about the centre. Various other duties as assigned.

Candidates should be attending a recognized university with academic background in either Museum Studies,  Folklore, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Applied Arts, Education, Music or other relevant discipline and should have a demonstrated interest in  history and heritage and an above average skill in playing traditional music. Candidates should have a good working knowledge of computers. Good interpersonal skills in meeting the public and working with colleagues. Candidate should have the ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision. Knowledge or experience in museum operations would be considered an asset.

Skills:

  •  Ability to play a fiddle/accordion/guitar

Bilingual Interpreter

One position is available through a funding partnership with Young Canada Works in Both Official Languages.

Cupids Legacy Centre Bilingual Interpreter will be the nucleus of a team of on-site interpreters that will greet visitors, providing guided tours of Cupids Legacy Centre and other attractions around the community in both official languages.

Education:

Fluent in both Official Languages. Candidates should be senior undergraduate or graduate students at a recognized university with academic background in either French, Museum Studies, History, Applied Arts, Education, Geography, Environmental Studies or other relevant discipline and a demonstrated interest in History. Candidates should have a good working knowledge of computers. Good interpersonal skills in meeting the public and working with colleagues. Able to work independently with a minimum of supervision is a requirement. Knowledge or experience in museum operations would be considered an asset.

Description of Tasks: 

1. Greet visitors at Cupids Legacy Centre reception area and determine language preference.

2. Conduct tours, in either official language, of Cupids Legacy Centre or various other attractions throughout the Town of Cupids including Cupids United Church, Orange Lodge and other historic attractions.

3. Review all previously translated material to ensure it is up to date; add material as needed.

4. Provide various other visitor services in both official languages as required. For example, information regarding services such as accommodations, attractions, dining that is available in the community and the region.

5.  Assist as required with researchers in the Family History Resource Centre.

6. Other duties as assigned.
